Refinishing the hardwood floors

After the kitchen floor was tiled, we decided this would be the best time to refinish the hardwood floors in the living room, dining room, hall and entry. So our nice empty kitchen soon because the storage room for all of our furniture and the sanding began. Michael would sand the floors and I would walk beside him with the shop vac to suck up the dust. It worked very well.

After we had everything sanded we swept the floors really well with the shop vac. I also used a tac cloth to get up all the dust we couldn’t get up with the vacuum. Then I took a lightly damp cloth and went over the floors one last time to pop the grain. Then we started staining. We had a custom color mixed (go figure, me wanting something different). Michael applied the stain with a lambs wool applicator and we let it set for 8 minutes. When we refinished the floors in the guest bedroom we let that stain set for 10 mintures. We liked the dark floors but wanted the grain to show a little more in the living room, so that is how we settled on 8 minutes. After the 8 minutes I would wipe up the excess stain with old ripped up t-shirts.

We had to work in small sections so I could reach over an wipe off all of the stain. In the photo above you can see before during and after. I love instant results!!

We did both sides and left a strip in the middle to work our way out. After the stain dried for a few days (we followed the directions on the stain) then it was time to put the poly down. Boy did those floors shine!!!

You can see the side by the window is shiny. Poor Michael, I would stop him every few minutes to take a picture. Oh well, we eventually got it done.

It was so easy to just grab my cell phone and take pictures. So most of these are from my phone. After the poly has a few days to fully dry, we put up the trim.

And because I love a good before and after, here is the dining room on the day we moved in.

After we moved our furniture back in.

The living room all finished.

So now that the floors are done, we can finish the kitchen. Stay tuned.

XOXO,

Erin
